Sermon from David and Lena working in Nepal

On the 3rd of August we had David and Lena come to speak to us about their work in Nepal. Lena works as a doctor in the local hospital. David works with a range of churches as an environmental consultant doing what he calls Ecotheology. Want to know more? Have a listen.

Welcome to Picton Uniting Church

Hello. Welcome to the unofficial blog of Picton Uniting Church. You'll find a news of events we're involved in, campaigns we support, things our congregaiton members get up to, and podcaasts of some of our sermons. You may find a few congregation members blogging here and sometimes posting from Twitter, so you might want to follow us there too.

We are a small congregation in Picton, NSW with a range of talents between us - teaching, doctoring, dog handling, farming, community work, climate campaigning, midwifery, retail, music, writing. And that's just the adults! Our children and youth look like they will outdo the adults in the very near future. We are led by Geraldine Clarkson, our Minister of Pastor, a lay position.

Of course, because we are all churchy people, you already know what we we think about everything. Except that might not be right. There are certainly a range of views in the congregation, leading one congregation member to describe us as Progressive Traditionalists. Our worship is fairly traditional, with some forays into trying new rituals. We sing old and new music, without drums!

The Uniting Church in Australia grew out of the Congregational Church, the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church. It has a long history of commitment to social and environmental justice, including reconciliation with the first peoples of Australia, with a specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Uniting Congress. You can find out more here.

The Uniting Church is also provides social care, services in rural areas, international development and advocacy.

However, for an outsider's view of the Uniting Church, it's worth turning to Dick "Godless" Gross, an athiest writer. Here, he describes the Uniting Church as "organised atheism's most dire threat." Perhaps true. Those quiet people you work with at making the world a better place? They might be in the Uniting Church!
